Does My Home Insurance Cover A Flood?

Flood damage is not covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy. Water damage to your home may be covered if it was sudden and accidental, such as a broke water pipe. The water "flooding" your basement from a broken pipe is not the same as water caused damage from a flood.

As a general rule of thumb, if the water first touches the ground before entering your home, it is usually considered flood damage.

Whether you are in a flood zone or not, you may want to consider purchasing flood insurance either through the NFIP or Private Flood Insurance.
